Romero Britto is an artist who impresses the viewer not only with his talent, but with his heart. Britto's exuberant style, combining neo-pop cubism, bold outline, and bright exotic colors transmit a positive upbeat feeling to his viewers. His unique style, using simple and direct images, has captured the attention of art collectors, critics, and media alike.
In 1989, Britto was commissioned by Absolut Vodka to join their group of showcase artists (which also include Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Ed Ruscha). The association with Carillon Importers and Absolut Vodka proved to be the catalyst for propelling his career.
Since then, Britto's work has appeared in over 60 national and international publications including Arts & Antiques and Art in America. The media exposure has helped Britto win recognition from both the established gallery crowd as well as commissions from such celebrated collectors as: The Swedish Royal Family, former President George Bush, Whitney Houston, and William Woodside (former President of the Whitney Museum). Internationally, his work has been exhibited in London, Stockholm, Madrid, Munich, Tokyo, Italy, and Brazil.
The young Brazilian artist was born in 1963 and began painting at the age of eight. He had his first public exhibition in 1979 at the Organization of American States in Brasilia. In 1987, Britto visited the southern part of the United States and currently resides in that region with his wife, Cheryl, and son, Brendan. "I have always had the idea of doing my paintings to reach people who are young in spirit, speaking directly to them through my art." said Britto.
Britto is concerned for youth and has a commitment to political and social issues. Through his art, he has lent his support to a variety of worthy causes. For example Amnesty International's "Article For Amnesty" was a fundraiser of 150 works by cotemporary masters including; Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Jasper Johns with Romero Britto being the youngest artist to participate. Other fundraising projects include: The American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Childrens Hospital for children, Philadelphia; and The American Red Cross.
Britto's most recent contribution is a ten year non-profit global train campaign to convert the energy and enthusiasm of young people into awareness and action on behalf of the environment. Britto has painted THE EARTH TRAIN that will journey across the United States, Japan, and Europe. See the gallery of Romero Britto >>
